I love this post so much! I've only come to understand in the past few years that all human beings are inherently creative and artistic. It's an innate quality that can get crushed or taken away by various forces in our lives. Part of my mission in creating and sharing my work publicly now is to reinforce the message that everyone is creative, and artists are not a distinct or uniform group of people.

Another banger from Adrianna :')

You are the SWEETEST!

I absolutely agree that our proclivity to create can be crushed by other forces—stress, shame, lack of time/resources, and so on. I think that, without my realizing it, that's sort of what Creativity Under Capitalism is all about: helping folks find their way back to a sustainable and joyful creative practice, whatever that looks like for them. Everyone is and deserves to be an artist!

I feel the same way! Broadening my understanding of what creativity really means and what does or doesn’t get to be considered creative has been so enriching and eye opening. And that false dichotomy of arts and science isn’t serving anyone.

This was so beautifully said, Adrianna!

Thank you so much Nico :') I love the idea of blurring the line between arts and science. They are so intertwined in so many ways, and being "good" at one doesn't mean sacrificing the other. I've found lately that my work at the fringes of science have really informed my creative work, and vice versa!

That's so cool! Same with math, the way it shows up in art, especially music and visual art, is fascinating.

I love this, Adrianna! It reminds me of when I have conversations with my students about “what is art” and we think about how everything around us was designed in some way.

“Creativity is a production process that involves agency.” Very well put.

I enjoyed this article and definitely agree that all the jobs/activities you listed are creative. But there are also jobs where zero creativity is wanted - you perform the tasks given to you and thinking/ideas are not needed/wanted. I'm currently working a job like that - and I literally wonder on a daily basis why it hasn't been replaced by AI. (Likely answer: I am cheap, KI is not!)

Oh, I definitely agree that some jobs simply don’t accommodate any creativity whatsoever. What I’m trying to say here is that everyone has the capacity to be creative, whether at their job or outside of it! It sounds like you get to do the latter :)

That I 100% agree with! <3

And yes - I feel like being creative actually adds time rather than taking up time. It makes me much happier which makes me more productive with the other, less exciting, stuff!
